POUDRE DOUCE: A POWDERY SOAP SCENT, YOUR OWN SIGNATURE
The cream behind the ear, the liquid on the wrist: two forms of the same scent, made at home with easy ingredients.
Some scents don't tell a story; they leave a feeling: the softness of a freshly washed towel, the powder applied after a warm bath, the warm, clean air inside the house in winter. This month we put that feeling into a bottle and name it Poudre Douce, "soft powder". We make a powdery, soapy, soft scent in our own kitchen, both as a cream and as a liquid perfume.
WHAT IS A POWDERY SOAP SCENT?
In perfumery, "powdery" scents give a soft, dry, clean and enveloping feeling. Behind this scent there are usually a few families:
– Musk: a clean, soft scent that stays close to the skin. It is the backbone of the powdery soap scent.
– Powder notes: a dry, soft scent reminiscent of baby powder and clean laundry.
– Vanilla: gives the scent warmth and sweetness.
– Sandalwood or cedar: adds a woody, calm depth beneath the scent.
When you bring these four parts together, the result is a "clean, soft and warm" scent. It is the scent that best suits November's warm corners.
THE POUDRE DOUCE ACCORD

An "accord" is a blend in which several scents come together in harmony. We build a four-part accord:
– 4 parts white musk fragrance
– 3 parts powder (baby powder) fragrance
– 2 parts vanilla fragrance
– 1 part sandalwood or cedar fragrance
All of them must be cosmetic-grade fragrances suitable for perfume making. Do not put soap or candle fragrances on your skin. First mix the accord in a small container; we will use this blend in the two formulas below.
TWO FORMS, ONE SCENT
– Cream perfume: a soft perfume made with coconut oil and wax, applied to the pulse points with a fingertip. Its scent stays close to the skin and spreads more quietly. It goes in your handbag and helps with dryness too.
– Liquid perfume: alcohol-based; it spreads further and lasts longer.
If you use both together, the scent settles in layers: first the cream, then the liquid on top.
ZARİF PERFUME 1 · POUDRE DOUCE · CREAM PERFUME (30 grams)

Ingredients
– 13 g coconut oil (refined, odourless)
– 6 g jojoba oil
– 6 g beeswax
– 3 g shea butter
– 2 g Poudre Douce Accord (about 40 drops): 0.9 g white musk, 0.6 g powder, 0.3 g vanilla, 0.2 g sandalwood
– Optional: 3 drops of vitamin E
Method
1. Melt the coconut oil, jojoba, beeswax and shea butter completely in a glass container in a bain-marie.
2. Take it off the heat and wait 1–2 minutes; it should not be too hot.
3. Add the accord and vitamin E and stir well.
4. While still warm, pour it into a small glass jar or metal tin and let it set at room temperature before closing the lid.
Because it is a water-free formula, it needs no preservative. It keeps for about 6 months. Coconut oil softens at around 24 °C; in warm weather keep the tin in a cool place.
ZARİF PERFUME 2 · POUDRE DOUCE · LIQUID PERFUME (30 ml)

Ingredients
– 24 ml perfumer's alcohol (ethyl alcohol, 96%, cosmetic grade)
– 4.5 ml Poudre Douce Accord: 2 ml white musk, 1.5 ml powder, 0.7 ml vanilla, 0.3 ml sandalwood
– 1.5 ml distilled water
Method

1. Into a clean glass bottle, add first the accord, then the alcohol, and shake gently.
2. Finally add the distilled water and shake gently again.
3. Close the bottle and let it rest in a dark, cool place for 2–4 weeks; shake lightly now and then so the scent can settle.
4. If you like, leave it in the refrigerator overnight and strain it through a coffee filter; this reduces cloudiness from the fragrance oils.
5. Transfer it to a clean bottle with a spray top.
Shelf life: about 1 year in a dark, cool place.
Safety: alcohol is flammable. Do not prepare the blend near fire, candles or the stove. Keep the liquid perfume away from children, and do not apply it to the eyes or broken skin.
WHERE TO APPLY IT?

Scents shine most at the "pulse points", where blood vessels are close to the skin: behind the ears, the neck, the inner wrists, the inside of the elbow and the décolleté. Because the skin is warm there, the scent spreads better.
– Apply the cream with a fingertip in one or two touches; don't rub, it spoils the structure of the scent.
– Spray the liquid perfume on the wrist and dab lightly; don't rub.
– If you apply it to moisturised skin first, the scent lasts longer.
HOW LONG DOES THE SCENT LAST?
How long a scent lasts on the skin varies from person to person, from skin to skin, and with everything from the air temperature to the quality of the fragrance. Approximate values are:
– Poudre Douce liquid perfume (15% fragrance concentration): about 4–6 hours on the skin. The powdery and musky notes, together with the vanilla and wood notes, carry most of the day.
– Poudre Douce cream perfume: about 2–4 hours on the skin. It stays close to the skin, a soft and calm scent; easy to reapply during the day.
To make it last longer:
– Apply the perfume to damp, moisturised skin.
– Apply it to the pulse points.
– Layer the scent by using the cream first and the liquid perfume on top.
– Instead of increasing the concentration, touch up once in the middle of the day; when the fragrance concentration rises too high, the risk of skin irritation increases.
NEW LIFE FOR AN OLD BOTTLE

You don't have to throw away a beautiful perfume bottle once it is empty.
– Wash the bottle in warm soapy water, rinse it well, swirl a little alcohol inside and let it dry.
– If the pump is worn, fit a new spray top or a roll-on top.
– Display a few carefully chosen bottles together on a simple shelf; they look like a collection.
Beyond holding the scent, the bottle becomes part of the home's warm corner.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS
– Look for "suitable for cosmetic use" or "suitable for perfume making" on fragrances.
– Ask the seller for the fragrance's recommended usage rate and safety information.
– For alcohol, look for "ethyl alcohol 96%, cosmetic/perfumery grade"; do not use cleaning alcohol.
– Those with a coconut allergy should not make the cream perfume with this oil; the liquid perfume is more suitable for them.
You can buy these ingredients from chemical suppliers, websites selling cosmetic raw materials and some herbalists.
A SMALL TEST FIRST
When using the perfume for the first time, apply it to the inside of your arm and wait 24 hours. If redness or itching appears, do not use it. In pregnancy, while breastfeeding, for children and for sensitive skin, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use. If there is a cat at home, keep scented products where it cannot reach them.
ZARİF PERFUME NOTE
The most beautiful scent is not the one noticed from afar, but the one felt up close. This winter, choose your own scent; let it be clean, soft and warm. Let everyone who enters a room with you feel, without knowing what it is, that "something feels very good".
